A Personal Relationship with God

Hey y’all!!

How are you doing today??

Before we dive into our post for today, I just wanted to take the time to ask how you are- physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. I really hope you are well but if you need someone to talk to, pray for you, hit us up at hello@unscripted.co.ke.

As we explored what it means to hear God’s voice and how to discern His voice, I received feedback in the form a question and the question was: “What does it mean or entail to be in a personal relationship with God?

Well, let’s dive into it, shall we?

What does it means to be in a Personal Relationship with God?

The idea of humans having a personal relationship with God was God’s idea. That was his intention from the word go, from the creation of the world. That was his original design. We see this in Genesis 3:8a, ‘And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool [afternoon breeze] of the day,’.

I reflected on this and talked it out with God and it came to mind that this must have been a routine with Adam, Eve and God. God would come into the garden in the afternoon, at the time when it was cool, and have a walk. He would have a walk with both Adam and Eve, and they would talk. Talk about anything and everything. I can imagine they would go sit next to one of the rivers in the garden, probably the River Euphrates, enjoy the cool breeze as they shared their hearts with one another.

I don’t know about you, but I would kill to be able to do that with God. I mean, he walks into my room and tells me, ‘C’mon, let’s go for a walk.’ I would be so happy. Ecstatic even.

Sin destroyed this design but Jesus came to restore it.

But this design was tampered with once man sinned, causing God and man to be separated and man to experience eternal death. But God so loved the world, that he sent his one and only son, so that whoever would believe in him would not perish but have everlasting life [John 3:16]. And that’s how God’s original design is restored- by sending Jesus to die on our behalf, taking the punishment for our sin so that the relationship between God & man could be restored.

That’s why when we died, we read in the Gospels that the curtain in the temple tore into two- to be specific, in Matthew 27:52a AMP, ‘And [at once] the veil [of the Holy of Holies] of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom,’. That curtain separated the innermost part of the temple; the Holy of Holies, where the ark of the covenant was kept, from the rest of the temple and could only be accessed by the High Priest. And even the High Priest couldn’t enter the Holy of Holies whenever he felt like it. He had to offer sacrifices so that he was without blemish when he entered God’s presence. God is a holy God and he cannot stand sin. Furthermore, they would tie a rope round his leg so if something happened and he died, they would pull him out cause they couldn’t even dare enter God’s presence.

But when Jesus died and the veil was torn, and the Holy of Holies was revealed, it was the beginning of a new dawn. It was the restoration of God’s original design to be in relationship with us.

So, then, what does it mean to be in a personal relationship with God?

It means that you first acknowledge the sacrifice that was made on your behalf. That you put aside your pride, ego, arrogance and humble yourself before God, admitting that you are a sinner and you need him. Let the truth sink into your heart and spirit that you are loved beyond comprehension and open up your heart to God to have a relationship with him.

You confess and acknowledge that Jesus is Lord and ask Him to be Lord & Saviour of your life.

You surrender yourself, your life to Him and begin to walk with Him.

You begin to spend time with him, learning who He is- his character, his personality, likes & dislikes, what makes him happy, what grieves and saddens him. And as you do so, you begin to discover who you are. You begin to learn things about yourself that you have never known as you begin to step into who you really are, your identity. Many people think that submitting to God and being in a relationship with God means you become a puppet and all He does is control and take from you.

No Honey.

God is a giver and as you give Him yourself, He gives you Himself and gives you who you really are.

And as you learn who you are, He also learns who you are!

Yes, God created you and he knows you inside out and everything about you. But who said he doesn’t like hearing you telling Him how you are like this, or like that, or you don’t like A, B and C. And who said he doesn’t like to hear what you want to say even if He already knows it?

He LOVES to hear from you.

He LOVES to hear you speak.

He LOVES sessions you have with Him where you open up your heart to Him- about your day, about the person who pissed you off, about whatever you wanna talk about. And as you share, he lovingly listens to you, guides you and helps you where it is needed.

Isn’t that amazing?

To be that close to the God who created the Heavens and the Earth?

Just typing about it warms my heart and makes me want to grow closer to God all the more.

And that, my friends, is what it truly means to be in a personal relationship with God.

~I pray that this resonates with you as deep as it resonates with me.

That it awakens this hunger and desire to be in a relationship with the one who made you and loves you. That it destroys the mindset of religion and of ‘doing things to gain God’s love, approval’ or to merely ‘escape hell’.

It’s so much more than that.

It’s to love and be loved by the lover of your soul.

If this has helped you, like, share and let me know in the comments or drop me an email!

And if you know anyone who will need to hear this today, please, share it with them.
